Spouse Alcoholic: Are Ultimatums Ever Worth Trying? Question About Alcoholic Spouse…?
Question by Marissa C: Are ultimatums ever worth trying? Question about alcoholic spouse…?
I’m married to an alcoholic. His drinking has caused many problems in our relationship as you can imagine. We also have 2 small children (ages 2 and 6) and he will often cuss at them or scream at them while intoxicated. In other words, he can be an angry drunk. His drinking has also caused some issues for him at work as well.
In a nut shell, it’s a big issue. He admits that he’s an alcoholic but doesn’t feel that he needs to change his behavior. I’m getting pretty damn tired of it. I often think about divorcing him. I’ve tried talking about this with him and it seems pretty obvious that he doesn’t want to change.
Would giving him an ultimatum such as: either get sober or we’re leaving, be worth trying? Has anyone here ever successfully helped their spouse lead a sober lifestyle?
Any constructive advice is appreciated. Thanks.

An ultimatum is the only thing that will work, the trouble is you dont sound as if you mean it. You must REALLY mean that divorce will follow if he doesnt stay sober, otherwise just put up and shut up.
