Religious Views of A.A.?

Question by Ezra: Religious views of A.A.?
I’m writing and English paper on how Alcoholics Anonymous has dramatically changed the 20th Century. I would like a better understanding on the spiritual/religious side of A.A.
Thank you.

Well, The second step of the 12 steps of AA requires the belief in a “Higher Power”. So in fact, this is actually most similar to initiation into the Secret Society called Freemasonry. In Freemasonry, initiates are required to have a belief in a Higher Power than themselves, which could be anything, granted it is a Higher Power.

Also, it was Carl Jung that apparently inspired the Creator of AA to…create AA. Carl Jung was asked what could Cure Alcoholism, and he replied something to the effect of a belief in A Higher Power or the influence thereof.

Actually the phrase was: Spiritum contra spiritus = Higher Power opposes alcoholism – Jung

“I found a similar phrase about 15 years ago in the latin writings of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (121-180 A.D.) — a great general, philosopher, and Caesar of Rome (161-180 A.D.) — Espiritum vinci espiritus — Higher Power overcomes alcoholism.”
