Hep C Messing With Periods?

Question by Annabel: Hep C messing with periods?
I got diagnosed with Hepatitis C 4 months ago but have a feeling I have had it for afew months more…. Doe’s anyone know if it can stop you from having your period?. I haven’t had a proper one all year (I’ve had one that lasted for a day and was only a spot of blood) I thought at first it was because my Liver function was so high that it was messing with my body, but its been down now for afew weeks…. Still no period, just really bad aches and pains. Pregnancy test negative. Any help much appreciated.

Yes, this is possible. You should check with your doctor.
No one here can tell how far advanced you are in liver disease.

When you have liver cell damage, it can affect the hormones in
the body. In liver disease:
Men can develop larger breasts and swollen scotrum,
shrinking testicles.
Women can have a changes in their period, and the ability
to become pregnant.

“Drs. Tarannum Master-Hunter and Diana Heiman
report that possible hormone-related causes of
secondary amenorrhea [absence of periods) include
hypothyroidism, anorexia nervosa or bulemia, chronic liver
disease”

“Obviously, if the liver is not able to regulate the hormones
correctly, it can lead to numerous health concerns. The best
solution is to keep your liver functioning at optimum levels so
it can do its job effectively.” Explains about liver and hormones.

“Anything that impairs liver function or ties up the detoxifying
function will result in excess estrogen levels, whether it has
a physical basis, as in liver disease”

“impaired liver and kidney functions can affect estrogen levels
in the body. ”

In the liver:
“If the female hormone estrogen is not broken down efficiently,
this can lead to excessive levels of estrogen in the body.
Excess estrogen can cause breast pain and lumpiness,
heavy painful menstrual bleeding and weight gain around
the hips, buttocks and thighs. ”
