Alcohol Abuse Campaigns: How Would I Begin a Local Pro-Choice “campaign”?

Question by Diana: How would I begin a local pro-choice “campaign”?
Unfortunately, the majority of people in area tend to default to “pro-life,” thanks to some loud anti-choicers. The problem is that while they don’t dedicate much to it, they may be thinking–or worse, voting–destructively.

I want to start a “campaign” (I’m really not sure what to call it) to raise awareness about what the pro-life movement and the pro-choice movement are REALLY about, educate voters on what they can do to bring about pro-choice legislation, and empower young people to be loudly and unapologetically pro-choice.

I have one specific method in mind: flyers. The flyers will contain thought-provoking questions and messages, statistics, educational material, and guides to pro-choice legislators, and information on both pro and anti-choice legislation. I want to both post these flyers and hand them out door-to-door.

Are there any steps or precautions I should take before I start? Is there anything else I should do, or something I should do differently?

The national web sites of Planned Parenthood and NARAL will provide you with a lot of guidance on how to engage in advocacy regarding pro-choice issues. There may even be a local chapter of activists that are already working and would welcome your help.

When I helped with pro-choice group back in the 1990s, we:
— produced a newsletter, which we handed out at public events, that provided up-to-date information about reproductive rights, attacks on a woman’s right to choose, etc. It was fact-based and encouraged readers to vote Pro-Choice and to write their elected officials.
— set up information booths at various public events to pass out Pro-Choice information and register voters
— monitored the local media and responded to all stories related to reproductive rights
— worked with local clinics providing abortion services or information about abortion, about what they needed; we did what they told us to, and never told them what we thought they needed

Now, with so many Internet tools, you can use FaceBook and MySpace to educate your network.
