I Think My Boyfriend Is Becoming an Alcoholic?

Question by dee-licious: I think my boyfriend is becoming an alcoholic?
I’ve been with my boy for 6 months now and I never really found his drinking a problem until now.

He stops in at the bottle shop about 3-4 times a week and has about a six-pack or two each time. It doesn’t seem that big a deal when hearing that but the point is “why does he feel the need to drink during the week?”

On the weekends he’ll write himself off and even if we have people over he’ll be the only one who’s so drunk that after everyone leaves he ends up vomiting or passing out. He does stupid things and sometimes embarrasses me. But I love him to bits!

His mom is an alcoholic and he always criticizes the way she is, but I can’t exactly turn around and say “well you’ll turn out like that”

Studies have shown that alcoholism “runs in the family” is this true? And should I be worried?

He’s 26 now, in Australia the legal drinking age is 18 so he’s been legally dringing for 8years and I don’t doubt he drank before that.

How can I tell him I’m concerned?

Speak up! Ask him if he’s ever noticed that he tends to overdo it when every one else has stopped drinking or gone home already. Tell him he’s starting to worry you, and you love him, and you don’t want to see his life go down a slippery slope. Just make sure you take a sympathetic tone instead of a “you need to stop, you’re a drunk” tone. It’s VERY possible that you’ll piss him off either way, but if it makes him realize what he’s doing, it’ll be worthwhile.
