They say alcoholism starts with the first drink.

1. Hiding money.
2. Hiding alcohol.
3. breath mints and visine.
4. missing work
5. change in mood and attitude
6. not interested in appearance
7. sleeping at odd times
8. appearing drunk at odd times such as a child’s birthday or at work
9. driving drunk
10. wrecking drunk
11. claiming to not be an alcoholic after all of the above
12. the bar is a second home
13. irrationality
14. violence
15. claims that those who want to help are actually trying to control
16. stops caring about things that used to be very important
17. depression
18. suicide attempts

Note: Many of these things may happen together or maybe only a few. Intimate knowledge of the person is important. This is a disease and should be treated as such; medical help or AA is crucial. But someone must want help in order for it to be effective; family members can want for them but they truly cannot heal an alcoholic. The individual must want it for themselves.
