Tree Stress and Abuse: Willow Bottlebrush

Tree Stress and Abuse. Identifying the signs of stress in trees and probable causes. Specimen: Callistemon salignus Major abuse: Large damage at the base of trunk as if the trunk was struck by something. This large damage has removed layers of bark. This large damage also appears to correspond with soil/nature strip damage. ¾ of the trunk circumference shows signs of ring-barking. A considerable amount of pruning as well as poor/sloppy pruning technique and collateral damage from pruning. Possible additional factors: Recent or frequent construction work performed in the area. Disturbed soil and/or added remains of construction debris to the soil. Signs of stress: An abundance of black/charcoal fuzz is spreading throughout the trunk and branches of the tree, most likely a fungus. Only a minimal amount of new foliage, and mature foliage concentrated toward the top of the crown while many mid and lower branches are dying or are dead. Compared to other C. salignus growing on the same nature strip, which appear to be relatively in the same young age range, most likely all planted during the same period, this specimen is somewhat undersized and clearly has less foliage and crown vigour than most others growing in that area. *Please comment if you believe this is not a Willow Bottlebrush, and some reasons why it may be another kind of tree. Here are some main reasons why I believe this is a C. salignus: Bottlebrush plants are closely related to Paperbark Melaleucas, but my
