Abuse Warning Signs: Are There “signs” That Tell You a Relationship Could Get Abusive?

Question by J.R. 777: Are there “signs” that tell you a relationship could get abusive?
My dad abused my mom and me and my brothers and sister. My grandpa abused my grandma. My great grandpa was abusive too. They were all physically, emotionally and verbally abusive. One girl from every generation ends up in an abusive relationship. I don’t want to be the next one. I want the pattern to be broken.
Are there warning signs? It may sound stupid to worry ahead about an abusive relationship, bit if you knew how my dad was, you would understand. Any advice?
I got out of one relationship because he had bad anger problems and would take his anger out on me. He acted like he was back on drugs… Again. He would get violent when mad, but never hit me. I ended it before then.
Please tell me if there are any signs you know of. From experience or anything. I don’t want to be the next one stuck in an abusive relationship.
Is it crazy or stupid to worry about this ahead of time???
One problem I have is that I don’t want to hurt anyone. Thats why I gave my ex a second chance when he treated me horribly. He lied about me. Made fun of me. Told people I had sex with him when I never did. (Im saving myself for marriage). He got mad when I applied for college. But I felt bad about breaking up with him because I felt like I hurt him. He messed up too much now. He will never get another chance with me.
