Acidity occurs when the secretion of acids by the stomach exceeds the normal quantity. Cells lining the stomach normally produce some amount of acid which helps in the digestion process by breaking down the food we consume. Over-production of this acid leads to a condition called acidity. When acidity occurs, the acidic contents (hydrochloric acid) of the stomach and gastric juices are pushed to the base of the esophagus or food pipe, resulting in a sour taste in the mouth that resembles the taste of a stale orange puree.

3.    Anxiety and negative emotions

4.    Aging that weakens digestive system

5.    Not taking meals on time

6.    Remaining on empty stomach for a long time or skipping breakfast.

1.    Diarrhea or Constipation

Treating Acidity

1.    Most of the people go for antacids that neutralize acids in the stomach, thus relieving you from the burning sensation.

2.    Avoid junk foods and packaged foods that are rich in calories since it may find difficulty in getting completely digested in the stomach. Artificially ripened fruits and vegetables that are kept in the cold storages are not best suited for eating, they cause acidity in many.

3.    Avoid spicy and heavy meals, it puts excess load on stomach, it finds difficulty to carry on the proper digestion. Such foods also harm the health of bones and teeth too.

4.    Having cold drinks and beverages after the meals should be avoided since they dilute the enzymes in the stomach that are liberated for the purpose of digestion of the food thus causing improper digestion and acidity.

5.    Stop smoking, alcoholism and drinking coffee, tea etc because the nicotine content and the caffeine present in coffee are very much harmful for the overall health.

Home Remedies for Acidity

1.    Chew on a small piece of ginger and coriander. It enhances digestive function.

2.    Coconut water is a very good cure. It flushes out the excess acid from your system and also soothes the harsh effects caused by it.

3.    Tulsi or basil leaf prevents formation of excess acid. Take 10 tulsi leaves everyday in the morning.

4.    After fried or spicy food, drink a glass of luke warm water. This helps in the digestion for the food and also burns the calories thus, preventing weight gain.

5.    Vegetables like drumsticks, beans, pumpkin, cabbage, carrot and spring onions, enhance digestion.

6.    If you feel symptom of the disease, take jaggery every hour. The symptoms will subside gradually.

7.    1 tbsp of Chebulic Myroblan or haritaki along with amla, is a quick cure.

8.    Fruit juice is good but never consumes it in empty stomach.
