Q&A: My Friend Has a Bad Home Life, What Can I Do?
Question by Kristy: my friend has a bad home life, what can i do?
this is about one of my best friends, she’s 16 like me, and she comes off as a normal teenager. she’s very bubbly, pretty, popular, and comes from a middle class family. however, because i know her so well, i know about her home life. her dad died when she was 13 and her 2 siblings are in their 20’s and both live at home. Both her siblings and her mom, especially, are alcoholic (since the dad’s death). “functional alcoholics” if you will. They get up and go to work and seem to live average, successful lives, but every night they come home and get totally wasted. Then, sometimes her mom brings guys home with her. I get texts from my friend saying “i hate my family”, “can i move in with you”, “my moms in bed with some guy right now”, etc. It’s not like she’s being abused, but i feel so truly bad for her. This stuff is only known to our close group of friends, no one else in the community. Any advice?? I never know what to tell her when it comes up or if i can help… :(
What Does This Sound Like to You?
Question by Fictional Irony: What does this sound like to you?
My “symptoms” are constant bloody noses and feelings of dehydration along with cravings for things I don’t usually like (such as chocolate or other sugary foods). I’m drinking a lot of water, just the right amount and maybe a little more if I feel that it might curb my thirst. Still, I’m always feeling parched and dehydrated and my nose keeps spurting blood.
When I plugged these symptoms into a search engine they told me that they were ‘common discomforts during pregnancy’ only I am not yet sexually active in ANY way so this doesn’t make sense to me.
Does this make sense to any one? What can you suggest or tell me, because I am sick of having to leave class constantly to get a drink of water or deal with a bloody nose. This has only been going on for 5 days or so, therefore I’m not TOO worried but I’m beginning to get a bit worried but I don’t want to go to hospital unless it’s absolutely necessary. Thank you for your input.

It is notable that most allergic symptoms worsen after the consumption of foods as eggs, shellfish, fish, strawberries, pineapple, tomatoes, chocolate or drinking alcohol (especially wine and beer) or smoking. During the allergies, the body reacts to them by producing extra histamine, hence anti-histamines drugs are recommended. Other foods that contain great amounts of histamine, or release histamine do cause severe allergic symptoms-alcohol as red wine form one of the major triggers. It must be noted that each individual has different tolerance level for histamine thus different people will react differently on different histamine levels. If your histamine tolerance level is reached; it overflows causing allergic symptoms happen.
What Alcohol Does to the Body

Either it’s Cold Outside or You Like Your Wine
Alcohol is a vasodilator, meaning the blood vessels dilate. Chronically dilated veins are often associated with liver illness, and the “enlarged red nose” of the chronic alcoholic is normally the result of permanently dilated blood vessels. Dilation of the veins of the esophagus can cause one to vomit blood. Late-stage alcoholics have been known to drown in their own blood because of ruptured esophageal blood vessels.
Edema, the accumulation of tissue fluid, also known as swelling, occurs with alcohol consumption because alcohol causes the blood vessels to expand, whereby the proteins and fluids within the capillaries leak into the interstitial space. This accumulation between the cells leads to tissue swelling. Because the fluid is not within the blood vessels, apparent dehydration exists. So you’re full of liquid but still thirsty.
