Alcoholics Signs: Isn’t This Misuse of Language?

Question by Not My Real Name or Face: Isn’t this misuse of language?
A person addicted to alcohol is called an alcoholic. So why is a person addicted to work called a “workaholic”? That would be a person addicted to drinking alcohol while working! Shouldn’t they just be called a “workic”? Or how about a “chocoholic” just being called a “chocolatic”? And as long as we are on this subject, why is it a “drug addict” and not a “drugoholic” or more correctly a “drugic”? I find this whole matter quite troubling.

Quite troubling indeed. I might add I have been unable to find Cheeseburg on a map and it’s driving me crazy.

How to Tell if Someone Is Truly Remorseful?

Question by Clarity: How to tell if someone is truly remorseful?
If someone makes the same mistakes over and over, could they truly be remorseful? Are some people just stuck in a certain behavior and can’t dictate themselves out? Is forgiving them automatically putting myself as the victim again? When do I know the person will never change and they have no remorse for the pain they have caused?

A great question that I have given much thought to over the last couple years.

“If someone makes the same mistakes over and over, could they truly be remorseful?”

I believe so. For example an alcoholic who cannot stop drinking will feel great remorse upon each relapse.

“Are some people just stuck in a certain behavior and can’t dictate themselves out?”

Sure, in some cases… like the practicing alcoholic.

Are Alot of People That Are in AA “Just Alcoholics” Because That Was BC (Before CRACK!)?

Question by 100% ?Creole?: Are alot of people that are in AA “just alcoholics” because that was BC (before CRACK!)?
I wonder sometimes if these people who say they have 30+ years of sobriety would have also had been DRUG ADDICTS too ~~ if all these drugs were around in “their” days?

Answer by ashj_1218
In all honesty, most people who are in AA are actually recovering mainly from alcohol…because it was their DOC (drug of choice). They probably did some other stuff too, but this is the one they keep heading back to. If they were harder drug users, they would be in NA meetings, which tend to focus more on the cocaine and heroin and other drugs. Either way, an addict is an addict.
