Diagnose Disease Symptoms: Need Advise in Helping an Child With Autism Make a Major Decision!!!?

Question by Heather C: Need advise in helping an child with autism make a major decision!!!?
My son is 13 years old. He was diagnosed with autism at 4 years old. However, at 2-1/2 years old, he was diagnosed with a genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis. This disorder causes tumors to form in any part of the body at any time. However, a common “symptom” of this disorder, which is usually the diagnostic feature of this disorder, is brain tumors. My son currently has a large one in his occipital lobe and will be undergoing surgery soon to have it removed. Today, I found out that he has been approved to be granted a “wish” from the “A Wish Come True” Foundation. This agency grants wishes to children with potentially life-threatening disease such as going to Disney World, meeting favorite sports teams, music groups or movie stars, etc. However, my son’s realm of thinking in this world is no farther than going bowling or the arcade. How do I help him make such a huge decision? He is very suggestive and if I started giving him examples of what he might like, he would just pick the first thing I say. Any advice? Serious inquires only!!!

Diagnose Disease Symptoms: Health or Education… Priorities, Straightening Out My Life?

Question by i_ride_a_rocket: Health or Education… priorities, straightening out my life?
I am 17 years old (female) and a junior in high school and a freshman in college (through the Running Start program.) I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder over a year ago, after suffering severe ups and downs that began in middle school. I have always exhibited “adult symptoms” rather than adolescent, which has created huge descrepencies in my academic performance. My grades’ qualities are wildly inconsistent, and reflect the episodal pattern of my disorder. I have managed to maintain a 2.7 GPA thru high school (despite dehabilitating lows and out-of-control highs) but this past year has been the worse… the disease has escaladed and episodes have been harder to predict and even harder to manage. I was hospitalized for suicidality and a suicide attempt, and have made 3 attempt.s this year. Until a few months ago, I have been primarily depressive in my mood. Now mania is becoming more of an issue and interfering with my life. I see doctors very regularly and am on three medications
(Risperdal, Celexa, and Eskalith). I am starting the full DBT program in June on top of my bi-weekly therapy.

Q&A: Is There Any “real” Way to Diagnose Depression?

Question by perfectasianguy: is there any “real” way to diagnose depression?
Doesn’t everyone exhibit “signs” of depression sooner or later in their lives? This doesn’t mean everyone in the world needs to be medicated (or maybe they should be). I’ve always been a quiet ever since I could remember and very shy around people that I don’t know. Around people I know, I am fine. I’ve also never been really “passionate” about anything. I mean I “enjoy” stuff, but never really passionate. I do stuff because I need to not because I’m passionate about it. Anyway, after much “cajoling” from my girlfriend, I decided to go visit a doc. Apparently, I exhibit many of the signs of depression and he’s put me on Zoloft and Wellbutrin. I don’t know. Maybe I feel “better”, but what if the shy, non-passionate guy is just who I am? My parents think depression and mental illness is for crazy people. Am I crazy then? So back to my original point, is there a way to ‘really’ diagnose depression, like can you measure one’s serotonin/dopamine levels? Thanks!
In response to some of the early replies to my question… so how does a doc know when to prescribe meds to a patient? i mean… i know that every patient out there on anti-depressants haven’t necessarily tried to kill themselves, but they are on the drugs none the less. A bit more info, my doc also told me to go seek a counselor/therapist in addition to the meds. I’ve tried two different “PhDs” at my school’s mental health services, but eventually felt like i was wasting everyone’s time. Opted for school’s mental health services because it was free and since I’m a student, I like free stuff.

Heart Felt? When Doctors and First Responders Fail to Diagnose Heart Attacks

Heart Felt? When Doctors and First Responders Fail to Diagnose Heart Attacks

A heart attack (myocardial infarction), is a common but often deadly event. Over one million Americans suffer from heart attacks each year and approximately one in three of these people will die.

During a heart attack, an artery providing the heart with oxygen-rich blood is blocked by blood platelets. The heart thus becomes oxygen deprived and heart muscle cells begin to die. Permanent damage can be caused in a very short time.

Signs & Symptoms

Heart attacks can occur quickly but there may be warning signs and symptoms. These can include:

• Pressure, squeezing, or pain in the chest

• Shortness of breath

• Sweating, nausea, or shortness of breath

• Back, stomach, neck, or jaw pain or discomfort

Alcohol Problems and How to Diagnose and Treat Them

Alcohol Problems and How to Diagnose and Treat Them

Alcohol problems can come in two different forms: one is the problem drinker, who has problems when they start drinking and sometime lose control of their consumption. But there is also the alcoholic, who cannot manage to live without drinking at all. What you need to do first is to identify which type of problem you are dealing with.

If the answer is the latter then you don’t have an alcohol problem, you have an alcohol addiction. This means that you are not so much a problem drinker as you are an alcoholic with a serious addiction. Now if you want to get help with your alcohol problem then the first thing you have to do is to get honest with yourself and really assess what is going on with your life. Is it possible to just go without drinking for a month and not make a big deal of it? Does doing so create resentment or make it hard to enjoy yourself? If so, then you are likely an alcoholic and might want to look into getting real help for it.
