Is It Futile to Argue With Someone Who Holds a Certain Position for Illogical Reasons?

Question by : Is it futile to argue with someone who holds a certain position for illogical reasons?
Or is there an effective way to subvert their feelings.

As an example, a friend of mine is convinced there is no such thing as “alcoholism.” I’ve shown him literature from the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association, the DSM-IV, all useless. Before you say that I’m simply appealing to authority, the literature goes into quite a bit of detail about why it classifies alcoholism the way it does.

Is there any way or any use in arguing with someone who does holds a position for irrational reasons?
I am a die hard Democrat and he is a die hard Republican, actually.

i have heard this before and am just curious if its true. my father is an alcoholic a** hole who is always mad at the world and trys to be there but can never put down the bottle to play a decent role as a father. could this be a reason i seem to have trouble with guys and fall for alot of players and end up getting hurt. also can that be the cause of a girl becoming promiscuous?

Girls always fall for jerks. Its like a human rule. If youre concient of what you are doing (being attracted to jerks) then you can detect jerks more easily and save yourself from falling for them and getting hurt, duh :D

Do You Think Addiction Is a Disease?

Question by Pride: Do you think addiction is a disease?
Four major national and international government health agencies, the World Health Organization, the American Psychiatric Association (APA), American Medical Association (AMA), and World Health Organization all define addiction as a primary chronic disease. Primary meaning that it is not caused by another disease, and chronic–well I hope everyone reading this knows what chronic means.

Any type of alcohol or drug use can cause permanent changes to the brain, no matter how slight the use. The extent of change in brain chemistry has to do with a person’s genes and the amount and frequency of use. A person can be a problem drinker or a problem drug user without having the disease.

Above are the things I do know. What I don’t know, and I don’t think anyone does, is at what point it becomes a disease. There is no quanifiable number such as with AIDs we say that when the persons T-cell count goes below 200 per microliter of blood. Is addiction
