Alcoholism Treatment Program: How to Understand Addiction and Family History With Dr Rodriquez and Delray Center

Alcoholism Treatment Program: How to Understand Addiction and Family History with Dr Rodriquez and Delray Center

Addiction risk and family history Everybody should be aware of the link between family history and alcoholism and really drug addiction in general. There is a major association with family history and alcoholism in particular. Alcoholism compare to drugs regular drugs takes longer to take effect to manifest where it’s obvious to everyone that there is a problem. One of the biggest associations is the family history; if you have even one family member with alcoholism actually your risk is much higher. If you have many family members your risk is extremely high. If you come from a culture that is known to have a very high rate of alcoholism as a culture such has Native American or Irish or Eastern European then your risk is very, very high and you should be really careful about even social drinking without having any problem already. This is an issue with relapse as well and that any attempt to control drinking will certainly fail because all of the wiring that comes with the changes of alcoholism developed in the human brain are that much more prominent if you are genetically pre-disposed. Again your biggest tip off as to whether or not you are genetically pre-disposed is if you have a family member or more that has a history of alcoholism or if you come from a culture where alcoholism is a very high statistical risk. Raul J Rodriguez MD, a double Board Certified Psychiatrist and Addictionologist, discusses addiction and family history www.delraycenter.com
