I Think My Dad Is an Alcoholic?
Question by Hockeyplayer778: I think my dad is an alcoholic?
My dad seems to have a bit of a drinking problem, and currently I am the only person in my family who is trying to help him. Here’s some background information – I’m his teenage daughter, I have two adult brothers who don’t like him, and my parents have been divorced for five years. They refuse to talk to each other, unless I force them to.
So anyway, my dad has this one drinking buddy that he will go out with to a bar up to 4x a week or they’ll stay at his house and drink. Last year for about six months my dad stayed sober and didn’t drink, because he wanted to get healthy and save money (he’s not in the best financial situation). However, he started drinking again. Basically every time I have gone over to his house recently, he has been drunk, is out with his drinking buddy, or has ditched spending time with me to go out with his drinking buddy. I DESPISE his drinking buddy and my dad knows it, but he doesn’t care. I looked up signs of alcoholism on several websites and my dad seems to be in the stage of “Denial”, because he will not admit to being an alcoholic. He says that he can stop drinking at anytime, which is just an excuse for him to keep drinking. I know for a fact that I will not be able to get him to go to AA, because he thinks he is above that. His low-life girlfriend, who he cheated on my mom with, thinks he is the best man in the world and has absolutely no problems. I’m just wondering, what could I do to help him? I don’t want him to develop full-blown alcoholism, and I’m worried. He needs help and won’t listen to me. Thanks
