Alcohol Abuse Definition: Decoding Angel DNA…?

Question by Robert Goerman: Decoding angel DNA…?
When I asked — “Is science impotent when it comes to human and animal encounters with mysterious lights, objects, and OtherWorld beings?” — several emotional replies defended the integrity and purity of “Science.”

Heaven help those innocent eyewitnesses who stumble across UFOs and “aliens” or “monsters” or “ghosts.” There will always be learned “experts” and “men of science” who just know that all these phenomena are delusions or alcohol-related and act accordingly. Like most of us, they demand a logical and rational accounting for every claim and occurrence. Unlike most of us, where no accounting is available, they invent one, with neither investigation nor specific cause. I have named this perpetual reaction by some individuals to the unexplained and unknown the CUTE (Compulsive Urge To Explain) factor. Despite the acronym, ridicule in the name of science is not pretty.

Does Her Drunken Behavior Indicate a Drinking Problem or Something More?

Question by : Does her drunken behavior indicate a drinking problem or something more?
I have asked about my wife on this site in the past. We are in counseling after she had a one-night stand with a co-worker after she had been drinking. He took advantage of this and took her to his apartment. Most recently she was on a girl’s night out last week and her friend had to break up an attempt of a male acquaintance with her in the back seat of his car (nothing had happened yet though he had managed to remove most of her clothing). Our counselor says that there must be some problem in the marriage (she thinks though I am not sure what it is) that would lead this to happen, though admits some women have been in happy marriages and still behaved this way when drunk. At all other times she seems very happy and is a great wife and my best friend. Is my wife just a problem drinker (in other words this would stop if she stopped drinking)? Or is this a sign of unhappiness in our marriage?
Smitten–you’ve given me such helpful advice in the past. Why the insult?

Alcoholic Denial: Just How Harmful Is Denial?

Question by Julia: Just how harmful is denial?
I explore my feelings all the time and I’m trying to cut down b/c I’m not very productive when I’m overanalyzing psychological stuff happening in my life.

However, how about if you are the opposite? You don’t like your feelings and will do anything to avoid them. My friend who is an alcoholic is very jovial and extroverted, the last person you’d suspect has problems in life. I notice that he will not talk about how he feels. When I ask how he’s doing, it’s always, “Good” or “fine”.

Even though he’s been to rehab, and continues to do follow-up care, he thinks that he can be a social drinker. He always talk about his alcoholism in a very distant, third-person manner.
