Come Home ‘Round Midnite
When I first started dancing, it was just taking a ballet class to help rehabilitate my knee from a judo injury. I had no idea I’d fall in love with it. Within a year, I’d become an apprentice with the resident company–The Valois Company of Dancers (named after our founder, Elaine Valois). After she retired, we kept the name for 2 years, then changed the name to Real People Moving. This was our first full concert as RPM, and it was an incredible experience. To dance with my friends was a joy and a privelege. Even before I started dancing for the Lord, my choreography sometimes tried to address social issues (see “Steps”, “Strange Fruit”, “The Color of Hate”, etc.). This piece touches on alcoholism, domestic violence, adultery/infidelity & friendship. Although there are a few comedic moments, the program notes bemoaned the situation portrayed, and it’s my hope that all viewers will be saddened at the fact that the lead female character returned to her abuser…and probably had done so in the past & most likely would do so in the future. GBU, MDJ. Dancers (in order of appearance): Marjorie Smyser, Marvin Johnson, Miriam Wagoner, Ellen Finkler, Rebecca Withnell. Music: “Come Home” and “‘Round Midnight”, by New York Voices, from their self-titled album. Choreography: Marvin D. Johnson
