There are the men, women, children, families, the mentally ill, veterans from Vietnam, physically handicapped, mentally retarded, the drifter, and the criminal aspect. In short, a composite of human misery on the street that really conflicts with the old view. This produces frustration and violence and resentment and conflict. So it’s not only taking care of a multiple number of types of people, but all of these emotions are wrapped up together. When four or five hundred of them come to the Mission for help each day as they do, it really takes a great variety of help and provisions to meet the needs of these various people.” Twenty percent of the homeless that comes to the NURM are addicted to drugs. “We need more control in the way the population has access to drugs.
