Alcoholic Physical Symptoms: Does Mono Cause Depression? How to Get Teen to Take Care of Himself to Recover, Rather Than Just Complain!?
Question by Marie123: Does mono cause depression? How to get teen to take care of himself to recover, rather than just complain!?
My 18 yr old was diagnosed with mono a few mo.s ago. His spleen and liver were enlarged, with elevated liver functions on labs.
He did reluctantly stop drinking; this was right before Mardi Gras..Lord knows the world ends if they can’t drink. He didn’t eat better, get sleep, take vitamins. He slept a lot during the day, but still stayed out late. He’s an adult, what can I do?
He looks rundown, and recently had enlarged lymph nodes again and a very red sore throat. He needs to have surgery-wisdom teeth causing problems. The surg’s been cancelled twice due to being sick. He’s drinking again.
He forgot to go to fly Dr to get checked out for surg. Very forgetful lately. Lost car keys, cell phone, loses money
He just told me he is very depressed, feels hopeless, helpless, said he wants to talk to someone;I’m getting on that. He’s lost interest in everything he enjoyed. Therapy helped in the past for him r/t divorce.
I’m trying to insist he move home for a while.
Input, please!

People who’ve suffered from mono often do get driven into depression.
I think in your situation getting him to talk to someone is a good start,
monoucleosis is one of most straining and frustrating illnesses to get.
And from the sound of it your son needs to get it treated more properly.
Habits such as drinking don’t help at all.
I encourage you in your trying to get him to stay with you for awhile,
it could be a factor that would speed up his recovery.
There is a lot of medicine for treating it,
but sometimes the best way to go is to first
get him to act as healthy as possible, less drinking, more water, more rest, the sooner he learns that he himself can make a change in how he’s feeling,
the more hope there is for a faster and successful recovery.
I wish you and your son the best of luck in this trial.
