10 Signs of Being an Alcoholic: Why Do People Think Drinking and Smoking Are Diseases?

Question by Bommie: Why do people think drinking and smoking are diseases?
I didn’t know about this until just now hearing it over the radio. I had no idea people thought drinking and smoking were diseases when they become addicted to them. I find that really stupid. These can cause diseases, but they are not diseases themselves. You choose to drink and become an alcoholic and damage your liver and you can choose to smoke or not and be a smoker and get lung cancer or throat cancer. If these are choices why are they beloved to be a disease? That just baffles me.
