Alcoholic Denial: Just How Harmful Is Denial?

Question by Julia: Just how harmful is denial?
I explore my feelings all the time and I’m trying to cut down b/c I’m not very productive when I’m overanalyzing psychological stuff happening in my life.

However, how about if you are the opposite? You don’t like your feelings and will do anything to avoid them. My friend who is an alcoholic is very jovial and extroverted, the last person you’d suspect has problems in life. I notice that he will not talk about how he feels. When I ask how he’s doing, it’s always, “Good” or “fine”.

Even though he’s been to rehab, and continues to do follow-up care, he thinks that he can be a social drinker. He always talk about his alcoholism in a very distant, third-person manner.

But, I think that it is fine. It does not necessarily have to be called “denial”. Consider Stoicism. People who don’t seem affected by emotions are often called “stoic.” But there’s a lot more to Stoicism than simply being unaffected.

Look into it!
