What Is Addiction?

What Is Addiction?

Let’s get something straight. Addiction is not a weakness of the mind or spirit. It is a sickness and need treatment like any other disease. There are multiple causes of addiction and any one or a combination of many factors can cause it.

Genetic, environmental, nutritional and social factors can all contribute to the onset of addiction and they all need to be addressed in the cure. Addiction is unhealthy or compulsive behavior that makes a person lose control of their normal balance and have cravings for substances like tobacco, alcohol, drugs, or stimuli like sex and gambling. The addiction is not just mental it is also physical as can be seen in the withdrawal symptoms.

You can spot addiction in:

The constant need for the substance or stimulation Failure of efforts to reduce the dependence Acceptance of the dangers of this behavior but an inability to do anything about it A need for the substance or stimulation even to just carry on with normal daily routines A need for the addiction to be satisfied even just to feel “normal” Desire for the addictive substance or stimulant so strong that other more essential activities and needs are forgotten.

If you see any of these signs in someone you know, there is a high probability that the person is an addict who needs treatment. But are you objective enough to take a long hard look at yourself. Do you display any of these signs? Or even the beginnings of them? If so, you are suffering from addiction or are well on the way to becoming an addict. The positive sign is that if you can recognize this signs of addiction in yourself, you have taken the first step towards a cure.
