Dealing With an Alcoholic Family Member: Leaving a Church… Not Being Fed Spiritually?

Question by Thom: Leaving a church… not being fed spiritually?
So, here’s the deal. My wife and I have been going to a church for the past year, not yet members, and we are having second thoughts about everything. Here are some issues we are having.

1. I inquired back in May concerning baptism. I need to publically show my commitment to Christ. Three months have gone by and my pastor has said nothing to us. I went to a church last week that baptises people ASAP after they inquire about it. Why is this guy waiting??

2. My wife and I have gone to three bible studies this year. And, we were only felt spiritually fed at one study. My wife’s other study was about managing her moods and mine was about biblical worldview. We feel as new believers that we need more Bible teaching than anything else, especially biblical application. Most of these studies, including sunday school, are led primarily though DVD videos. I have a real problem with them not really teaching believers the word of God.

3. We listened to a sermon about a month ago about community. I had a real problem with it. My pastor decided to say that we need to be a community that interacts like people at a bar. I don’t think that that is biblical AT ALL! My family is full of alcoholics and I know that I have the gene, too! I don’t think that we need to use a sinful addiction to analyze how we should act in Christ.

So, we have been looking around for other churches, but I feel bad that I have to leave here. I just have a real problem with a lot of stuff here. So, should I leave? Also, how should I tell my pastor, or even tell him? Mind you, we have been there a while, but we are not yet members.

Thanks!
To the girl that says that we should be drunk with the holy spirit. That is unbiblical, too. That’s not what the holy spirit does. The holy spirit is to empower us, not to intoxicate us.
To the JW, you are unbiblical, too.
As for salvation, I know that I am saved. I came to the Lord a year ago and my wife came a little after that.

As for studying the bible, we do that already at home. I read my bible daily and try at least once a week get together with my wife and read and study together.

Studying at home is not the issue. I need help as the spiritual leader of my home to be equipped to handle this. I feel that I am not being equipped.
Greengo, I absolutely agree that worldview studies are very important, but I believe that they are for the more mature believer and your worldview will manifest itself from your bible learning. So, I believe that bible learning is more important than worldview, becuase I view it as a prerequisite.
Alright, I already said that I have been saved. I KNOW THAT BAPTISM IS NOT A REQUIREMENT FOR SALVATION! Baptism is an early act of showing commitment to Christ.

Yes by all means do.You and your wife need a church that teaches the truth and that you both can be happy with.If I may suggest a non denominational church or a christian center.I go to one and have learned alot from it and we have a blast being happy there.
