My boyfriend gets an SSI check every month for $ 500 but he won’t tell me why he gets a check and he doesn’t have anything physically wrong with him and he doesn’t have any mental illness that is noticeable (to me at least) so what type of disability could he have?

Who knows? It could be anything. If due to a mental disorder he is probably on meds. A lot of people have mental disorders which aren’t always evident all of the time. Now that I’m retired, I doubt that anyone would know that I am bipolar unless they lived with me and were fully aware of the many different symptoms bipolars can have. If due to a physical disorder he is also probably on meds. Perhaps he is a slow learner?
And by the way, the amount of the benefit has absolutely nothing to do with the reason someone is getting a disability benefit. SSI is the federal welfare program and benefit amounts are effected by a person’s living arrangements and whether or not they have another source of income. And if someone is getting social security disability instead (SSI is not social security) then the benefit amount is determined solely by how much someone paid into the social security system. If they were a high earner they get a higher benefit; a low earner – a low benefit.
