My Brother Is an Alcoholic. Can He Qualify for Disability?

Question by jeanbean: My brother is an alcoholic. Can he qualify for disability?
He is 48 years old and lives in my parent’s basement. He has disrupted their lives terribly. I am resolved to the fact that I can not fix it. But I want him out of their home. Would he qualify for any government assistance? He is disabled. He acts like a child–“wet brain”? He can not hold a job. He drives drunk frequently, brings strangers home. It is a horrible situation. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

I am assuming your parents are mentally competent, makes this their problem, not yours. And no, alcoholism doesn’t qualify anyone for any kind of disability. If he is no longer capable of functioning normally, he should be committed.
