Tree Stress and Abuse: Inspecting a Casuarina

Tree Stress and Abuse. Identifying the signs of stress in trees and probable causes. Specimen: River She-Oak (Casuarina cunninghamiana) While I was taking photographs of some Prickly-leaved Paperbarks I happened to pass by this Casuarina. One of the first things I noticed was the mushrooms growing around the tree. Mushrooms (the fruiting body of a fungus/visible reproductive organ) can be seen as a sign that there is something wrong with a tree or some vulnerability in the surrounding soil area that favours or encourages fungus growth. It does not guarantee that a plant is beyond hope, but it can be a warning sign. Common soil borne fungi will live on woody and herbaceous plants, usually fruiting in clusters on the roots or lower trunk of stressed or diseased plants. I decided to take a closer look to see if there were any additional signs and symptoms of stress or compromises in the tree’s health. This video documents our walk-around and inspection of the Casuarina.
