Children and teenagers can go through depression just as adults can. About 10 percent of children go through depression. Most parents with depressed children do not get the needed help for them. It is very important to get help for your depressed child or teen. There are effective treatments and it can even be cured and prevented from coming back in the future. The most common signs of Depression in children and teenagers are:

– Feeling sad, anxious, irritable or angry

– Lack of enjoyment in life

– Feelings hopeless and worthless

– Having trouble with their sleep (waking up at night), appetite, and concentrating

There are even cases that people with severe depression hear voices. They may even have ideas or thoughts about harming themselves or other people.

– stress

– parents having marriage problems (divorce, separation, etc.)

– school bullying

– not doing well in school work

– conflicts with their parents, friends, brothers or sisters, etc.

The most common cause is If the child’s or teens parents have a family history of depression. If the child had a family member who has or had dealt with depression, chances are at a greater risk that they could be depressed.

If you think your child is depressed it is wise to get him or her help. Depression in children causes pain on the inside and it hurts. You need to get your child help if you think they are depressed. The first thing you should do is take you child to a doctor such as your family doctor or their pediatrician. When taking your child to a doctor describe the behavioral problems and the changes in feelings that you see in your child. The doctor will most likely suggest mental health services and help you find a psychologists, psychiatrists or social workers.

Please note that it is not unnatural for a child or teenager to feel depressed. Researchers believe that 1 in 5 children will experience depression by the time that they are 18.
