Benefits of Music Instruction

Music instruction is incredibly valuable for children socially, intellectually and emotionally.

Studies have found that music instruction makes children better students in math and science. Learning to read music requires a different kind of thinking that can be applicable to other areas of study.

Music can be a great social outlet. Kids can bond over playing together.

Music instruction can even give kids a leg up in college admissions. Colleges view students who have benefitted from music instruction as having a broader understanding of their world than children who don’t play any instruments.

While correlation isn’t causation, it’s interesting that the brightest Silicon Valley engineers and technical designers are mostly practicing musicians.

Comparing IQ tests of children given music instruction with those who were not, researchers saw greater increases in intelligence in the students given music instruction.

Music instruction can even help keep kids safe. For example, the Texas Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse Report discovered that high school students who took part in band or orchestra had lower levels of substance abuse. Reported in Houston Chronicle, January 1998

Learning an instrument requires the discipline to practice. Studies have shown self-discipline to be a skill to be mastered in and of itself. Mastering an instrument also requires hand-eye coordination, also a valuable skill in and of itself.

Besides the career and education boosting benefits of music instruction, learning an instrument gives children a valuable creative outlet and beneficial hobby that they can enjoy for the rest of their lives.
