Living With an Alcoholic and {Steps|Actions} to Take in This {Situation|Circumstance}|{Steps|Measures|Actions} to Take When Living With an Alcoholic|
In this article I am going to talk about living with an alcoholic and how to help them with their problem. Staying in this situation without addressing the problem will put a strain on your relationship. The more it is ignored the harder it will be for the person to stop drinking.
If you plan on staying with this person and not trying to fix the problem then it will become your problem also. Watching a loved one harm themselves through the abuse of alcohol will cause you problems as well both mentally and emotionally.
You can also become an enabler for the alcoholic. By not addressing the problem is like giving them a silent nod of acceptance of their habit. Also when you spend time with them while they are drinking will make them feel like you agree with it and nothing is wrong. If you are enabling them by drinking with them, purchasing the alcohol for them to drink, or making excuses to family members or their boss or coworkers then you need to stop.
Also do not think that you are the problem and the reason that they drink. Make them responsible for their own actions so that they see that they can make the decision to stop drinking. Stop spending time with them while they drink and don’t allow them to turn you into the bad person. Don’t play clean up behind them when they make a mess of their life because of their drinking. This will make them think that they can’t help themselves and you are ok with their drinking. This will only enforce their habit and they will continue doing the same things.
Don’t argue with them or try to reason with them while they are drinking. Explain to them that if they want to talk with you or discuss the problems that you are having then they need to be sober and alert while you are talking.
