Omega 3 Supplements Might Help Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
Fatty liver disease is a serious liver disease affecting around 10 percent of the population. Whilst it can be caused by excessive alcohol consumption non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is one form that is not caused by excess alcohol. And there is now evidence that increasing your intake of the essential fatty acids known as the Omega 3 fatty acids can help if you have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. If you do have the disease you may not know, as many people with the disease do not suffer symptoms, and therefore do not consult their doctor. Notwithstanding this fatty liver disease is estimated to affect around 10 percent of the population, and studies have also shown that those suffering from this liver disease may suffer higher mortality rates than the rest of us. Those who do suffer from symptoms may well find they suffer from unexplained fatigue or pain in the abdomen, or perhaps unexplained loss of weight. The disease is caused by a build up of triglycerides in the liver. It is considered that there are a range of causes for this build up, and in particular that around 20 percent of obese adults will suffer from a form of fatty liver disease. However it can also be caused by rapid weight loss, type II diabetes, some medications, high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood as well as some other factors. A new study has now found that increasing your intake of the Omega3 fatty acids and in particular DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) may improve the outcomes of people suffering from non-alcoholic fatty disease. A study done on rats has come to the conclusion that “Omega-3 fatty acid supplements may have a potential therapeutic role in patients with NAFLD”. Evidence is now clear that the majority of us are deficient in the Omega3 essential fatty acids due to the reduction in our diet over the last century of our intake of fish and other seafoods. The essential fatty acids known as the Omega3 fats are primarily found in fish and in particular in oily fish. And studies have shown that there are a wide range of health conditions which can benefit from increasing our intake of the Omega3 fats. Some of the health benefits include a reduction in the risk of heart disease and stroke, and a reduction in the risk of death from heart attack. These are obviously substantial health benefits. And now one of these health benefits may well be an improvement in outcomes for those suffering from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. There’s a wide range of health reasons to supplement your diet with the essential fatty acids DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid). The good news is that there are excellent high quality Omega3 supplements available on the market which are cost effective and can be easily taken daily. The bad news is that not all Omega 3 supplements are high quality.
