Alcohol Interventions Can Save Lives

If someone you know is struggling with alcoholism, the time to seek help for them is now. That being said, it is normal for alcoholics and addicts to be in denial about he true scope and seriousness of their problem. Often, they view comments made by others about their drinking and the negative effects that it is having on their lives as overreaction or exaggeration.

For this reason, and many others, alcoholics are often unwilling to admit that they have a problem and seek treatment.  For those that love and care about them, it can be extremely painful to watch someone suffering from alcoholism sink further and further into addiction.  An alcoholic’s emotional highs and lows and erratic behavior can also take its toll on the relationships between the addict and those that are closest to them, leading to family conflicts and arguments.

An alcohol intervention, when properly organized and led by an experienced professional, can be a very effective wake up call to a person suffering from alcoholism.  A group of the alcoholic’s close friends, family members, and in some case clergy members and employers, gather together to share their concerns with and offer support to the addict, while urging them to seek treatment at the same time.  Sharing their concerns and expressing their fears about the direction that the his or her life is taking, and providing specific examples in an attempt to convince the alcoholic to seek treatment are all common occurrences at alcohol interventions.

While it may be difficult for the alcoholic to hear just how much their actions have caused those closest to them to suffer, being confronted with the truth, as long as it is done in a loving and supportive manner, can have very positive results.  Often, those who are closest to the alcoholic have reservations about confronting them.  In the context of a professionally mediated intervention, these fears are often allayed and participants feel free to express themselves, and in turn, are able to effectively help those that they care about.

Familial bonds and relationships are recognized and the alcoholic is given the opportunity to see exactly how their actions have affected these important bonds.  A sincere desire to change and the decision to enter treatment are often life changing events, and many alcoholics have stated that they would never have come to this crucial point of realization without an intervention.  Interventions truly do save lives.
