The Truth and Statistics About Alcohol Abuse
The Truth and Statistics about Alcohol Abuse
Throughout history, alcohol has been the social drink of choice by nearly every civilization on Earth. In the past, alcohol has been consumed mostly for celebrating or as a way to relax. That has changed over the years, with 1 in 13 people in the US dealing with alcohol abuse and needing some form of alcohol rehab. Alcoholism, amongst every age group, is becoming a very serious issue in this country with many still not fully realizing that alcoholism is a disease and to truly take part in sober living, one might have to get into a good alcohol rehab program.
12 to 14 million people of all ages every year abuse alcohol, and over 100,000 people who do not seek alcohol rehab die annually. One of the largest factors in automobile accidents, homicides, theft and suicides, alcoholism not only affects the person that needs alcohol rehab, but every person living in the United States as well. Most people understand that when someone is hooked on drugs, they need a drug treatment program. With alcohol, it is different. This seemingly harmless drink is used in social settings so there is a wide acceptance that all people drink occasionally. Therefore, it is even more difficult to identify alcoholism as a disease and the abuser is much more reluctant to enter into alcohol rehab. This is especially true if the person is in their teens or early 20s because it is hard to understand that someone that age could actually need a program for his or her disease to aid them in living sober for the rest of their lives.
There are signs a person can look for when they suspect that a family member or friend is in need of alcohol rehab because of serious alcohol abuse. The rule of thumb for women is if you regularly consume more than 7 drinks per week in the privacy of your home and 3 or more drinks per week in any type of social setting. If a male consumes 14 or more drinks per week and more than 4 in a social situation, then you can suspect that he is not part of sober living. With young people in their teens and early 20s, it is even more difficult to discover if they need alcohol rehab, because there are many other factors that could contribute to their behavior.
