TEENS AND DEPRESSION – THE SIGNS, SYMPTOMS, DANGER, AND THE LIFELONG STRUGGLE AHEAD

 

 Depression can effect people of any age. It also does not discriminate against gender.Today, the rate of depression amongst teens is forever increasing.

 What many people are not aware of is, the severity of depression and it can be debilitating to a person suffering from it. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of depression early is critical. If depression is left untreated,it can result in suicidal behavior, self mutilation, drug and alcohol usage,and many more horrific events. This is why everyone needs to be fully aware of depression and it’s symptoms.

 Depression can be treated and it’s best if it is caught early. Many people mistake teen depression for teen hormones. They think when a teenager lashes out or is being over emotional, that it’s stemming from hormones.

 However, that is not always the case. Depression is a much more complicated issue than hormonal reactions. As with adults suffering from depression,it can destroy a teenager just as easily.

 There are several different things that should be taken into consideration when it comes to teens and their mental health. Being a teenager comes with a lot of stress. Being able to recognize the signs of depression in teenagers is very important.

 Symptoms such as, irritability, agitation, feelings of worthlessness, guilt,lack of motivation, enthusiasm and energy, suicidal or self mutilating behavior, over eating or other changes in eating habits, withdrawal from loved ones, frequent crying, loss of interest.

 Depression symptoms vary for different ages. Therefore, the symptoms of teen depression may not be the same as the symptoms an adult has while struggling with depression.

 Some teenagers will mention things like running away or committing suicide to others. This type of behavior can signal depression and this it their way of crying out for help, even if they are not fully aware of the problems.

 Signs of depression should never be taken lightly or ignored. In some cases, a person will act out against these feelings such as, becoming violent, acting out in rage, rebellious behavior, aggressive behavior towards others.

 Any type of unusual, ongoing behavior should be addressed, even if it is not depression, there could be other serious problems that need treating.

 The good thing is, there is a wide range of treatment options to choose from. A Dr. can easily help people to decide which treatment is best for them. Besides medication, and counseling, there are other ways that can be of help to someone struggling with depression. Many people find comfort in talking, writing about their feelings, or taking up an activity.
