Family Stress and Onset of Teenager Problems

Family Stress and onset of teenager problems

With teenage being the most stressful part of parenting, it is important that you avoid any circumstances that can ultimately lead to teenager problems. Most teenager problems have grave consequences and you can end up spending a major part of your life fighting them. Hence it is important to nip most of the causes of teenager problems in the bud.

Of all the causes of teenager problems, family stress is perhaps one of the most serious external factors that can lead to various teenager problems like depression, stress, drug abuse and various other behavioural issues. Let us look at what family stress includes and the teenager problems that result from that stress:

Parental fights: Constant fighting and bickering of parents, inability of parents to agree with each other, violent discussions between parents in front of kids and use of bad language in front of kids are some of the key reasons for various teenager problems related to behaviour, performance at school and depression. Several researches have shown that parental fights have significant impact on kids and when it comes to teenagers they either end up being destructive and rebellious or withdraw completely from relationships.

Single Parenting: Bringing up a child without spouse or any form of help can be very stressful. Sometimes this stress manifests itself in the form of anger, depression and frustration for the parent. This has serious impact on the child and when they grow up to be a teenager; it can lead to several teenager problems like depression, withdrawal; declining performance at school and in extreme cases could lead to alcohol abuse, excessive smoking and drug abuse.

Financial Problems: Financial crisis and resultant job losses have become common features in today’s world. Over and above this most families suffer from stress related to huge debts taken and the necessity to keep up to the payments to avoid repossession of their houses. Other forms of financial stress result from cost related to the need to give the best education to kids, to provide for all their kid’s hobbies and to maintain their lifestyle. This has made most people disillusioned and anxious, which has an impact on the way they treat their kids. When these kids grow up parents can face several teenager problems like anger, rebellion; lack of interest in studies, depression, alcohol abuse and excessive stress.

Other interferences or responsibilities: Other form of family stress relates to excessive interference of close relatives or significant responsibilities of elderly sick parents or relatives, which eat into the family time. This results in low level of communication in the family and also lack of opportunities for the family to bind together. This typically leads to withdrawal related teenager problems when kids grow up and they stop sharing and communicating with parents. These kids are more influenced by outsiders and sometimes if they fall in wrong hands they can get swayed to experimenting unsafe sex or using drugs.

Parental Careers: High flying parental careers and lack of proper child care are other causes of serious teenager problems. In most of these cases, the kids have limited communication with their parents resulting in them being open to external influences, which could sway them to try drugs or unsafe sex. Since parents have no control on their teenager’s life, they cannot positively influence them to give up some of the habits.

Most teenagers gain a new sense of individuality with their teens, and they often feel that they are not dependant on their parents any longer. So children who had previously been subdued can become more rebellious around the time they become teenagers. These children have little regard for family life and bonds and hence are more prone to various teenager problems, which could ultimately destroy them and cause lot of family stress.
