STEP FIVE “———-confess with your mouth—” Ro 10: 9 “Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” Jas 5: 16 “Now make confession to the Lord, the God of your fathers, and do his will.” Ezr 10: 11 “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Jas 4: 6 “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful.” Pr 12: 22 ADMITTED TO GOD, TO OURSELVES, AND TO ANOTHER HUMAN BEING THE EXACT NATURE OF OUR WRONGS. The Fifth Step is the second of the spiritual tools which the addicted person must learn to use and which will be used by him for the rest of his life in recovery. It is a vital and indispensable part of the process of recovery, for it requires the verbal admission of those things about the person which he has struggled to keep secret. The admissions must be not only to himself and to God, but to another human being. It is this very fact of revealing himself to another person which teaches him humility and honesty to a degree he has never before known. It also has the cleansing effect of confession which is necessary for the freeing of the soul from the tethers of secret guilt. If this Step is not taken, the addicted person will not recover from his addiction! The Fifth Step is designed to accomplish several objectives. This illness is both a physical malady and a malady of the spirit. It is characterized by a powerful denial of the existence of any problem and an inability to stop using and abusing mind-altering substances. The addicted person has literally lost the ability to control his drinking or drugging; he has become powerless to stop destroying his life and the lives of those around him.
