Signs of Emotional Abuse in Children?

Question by Melissa: signs of emotional abuse in children?
I babysit this 6 year old every wednesday. I know very little of his family dynamics but I have reason to believe he is emotionally abused. I am not worried about him being physical harmed I know for a fact he has never been sexually or physically abused. My reason for thinking he is emotionally abused are

– he is extremely negative
– hes an extreme pessimist
– if he breaks something or misplaces something he is so worried at how all react
– he will never admit to doing something wrong, he will spend 2 minutes rambling in circles trying to make his story fit so that someone else is to blame.
-he is so, so impatient. Example if he is playing the playstation, and the controly fusses or someting goes wrong within ten seconds he is having a fit.
-if he is have a bad day everything he says is negative.

I am constantly reminding myself I am dealing with a six year old. he is way above his age, not necessarily mature. Hes just a kid that a grown up to quickly

what are some signs that a kid is emotionally abused?
if I named symptoms it is fine if you repeat them
I have no intention what so ever to report the situation unless I feel the child is endanger. I am more or so just trying to help the kid by understanding him a little better. he is a frusterating child and it would help to understand him

It would not be worth the trauma and trouble you could cause the family or the child by reporting what you think may be “emotional abuse”. I once had someone formally accuse me of emotional abuse and by the time the authorities found out it wasn’t true, the kid was a horrible traumatized mess! Being coached by a stupid therapist that he was a “victim” just to be told later that he wasn’t after all caused him so much confusion and distrust that he no longer respects authority figures and does a lot of drugs. He was so clean cut before!

High quality therapy can be very good for children, but the parents have to be very, very careful to avoid the HORDES of incompetent licensed jackasses out there!
