Alcohol Abuse Support: What Would Be Your Solution for “Welfare Reform”?

Question by DelightfulTiny: What would be your solution for “Welfare Reform”?
I don’t support cutting all welfare. It has a very good purpose. But I do support “Welfare reform” so to speak. I personally know far to many people who abuse the system and I’ve experienced (being on welfare myself after a layoff) just how easy it is to become dependent on the system.

Welfare Reform:
Require drug and alcohol screening
Require PARENTS to be legal citizens, not just the children
Require mandatory job searching (as is required for recipients of unemployment)
Pur Welfare-to-work back in motion

So what changes, if any, would you make?
Pur = put
@ Dasher74…that is a great idea! At the same time, we have to be very careful NOT to take away possible real jobs from other people. My husband hasn’t been able to find stable work as a carpenter for years, and he’s talked about going into the fields to work along side Hispanics, but guess what? He called around several local ranches/farms and they are all at full capacity because of the foreign workers. I do understand that it’s necessary to bring in Mexicans because Americans don’t want to do those “dirty jobs”, but still. So, we would need to be very careful about that.
@MrsBoss…not an option due to our God given freedoms, but welfare in CA no longer allows you to “add” children for cash add. If you originally start out with two kids, and than how another child, you can’t get more cash aid for that child. You can get more in food stamps and the child can get medi-cal. I think it’s a very good program and should be continued. Maybe we should require mandatory “planned parenting” classes for parents to educate them on birth control/sterilization? LOL There could also be classes for teens on planned parenting and for parents on how to prevent their child (by talking to them, providing birth control, ect.) from getting pregnant?? Some good ideas are out there!
@Thomas…in CA, welfare to work was cut and I’ve never heard of them doing drug and alcohol screanings here…
@Outtolunch…you have good ideas too! On food stamps, you can pretty much buy any type of food so long as it’s not “hot”. This includes soda, chips, frozen fried food, ect. So that adds something to my reform…

Put limits on what recipients can buy with food stamps. Have a certain amount allocated for fruits and veggies, whole grains, and cut out foods such as chips, frozen fried foods, soda, etc. If food stamps follow a system similar to that of WIC, we would probably get many kids back in shape!!

And yes, mandetory schooling is required for kids on welfare.

Also, having fines and fees or possible temporary expulsion for those NOT keeping their governmnet subsadized home in order should be mandated as well.

Great ideas, the liberals will be against them though

“drug and alcohol screening” oh no, the liberals will not tolerate that one, that would remove the lazy leeches in the ghettos off of welfare
