Many woman campaigned for prohibition as hard as they campaigned for the right to Vote (Suffrage). Alcohol was blamed for spousal and child abuse as well as other crimes. Many people believed that by banning alcohol it would eliminate these crimes in the future.

In actuality, spousal and child abuse continued and is still a problem today and crime actually increased during prohibition. It is believed that the reason the 18th and 19th amendments passed is because of the number of men overseas during WWI who were unable to vote.

Prohibition was a miserable failure from a legal point, as so many people just ignored it and drank illegally. Prohibition was repealed by the 21st amendment in 1933. Then the government started heavily taxing alcohol to help finance FDR’s programs during the “great depression”.
