Is This Normal for Alcoholics?
Question by Dawn Rain: Is this normal for alcoholics?
My mom is an alcoholic. She’s cut back on her drinking though a lot these past two days. She’s been hearing stuff and thinks there people at our door. Is this normal? Is it chemical imbalance/withdrawal symptoms?

What is she hearing? If she thinks people are at the door, then is she just hearing ringing? Or is she hearing voices? Withdrawal from alcohol for long term users can be very difficult and potentially very serious. It is a physical dependency, and if not managed well, can have dire consequences. I’m hesitant to say this, as it was an extreme case, but alcoholism and withdrawal killed my father in law. I would highly recommend you consult a doctor about what’s going on with your mom. It may not be anything, but its best to be sure.
In my father-in-laws case, he would periods of time without drinking, then binge, then quit cold turkey again. It put his body into a kind of shock. He died after a weekend binge, with his major organs shutting down one at a time until my wife and her mother had to make the call to pull the plug on the life-support machine.
