Is He an Alcoholic…?

Question by monkey: Is he an alcoholic…?
My boyfriend, who lives with me, has a drinking problem. He doesn’t get drunk every single night–I would say 2-3 days out of the week–and when he does it’s ALL or NOTHING. He gets wasted and DRIVES HOME–in a car that’s insured under my name!! I’ve tried talking to him about this countless times to no avail (the usual, “I don’t have a problem, I can stop whenever I want to, I just have a lot on my mind right now etc.). He gets home and we can get into this massive arguments and he’ll wake up in the morning and not remember a thing! He’s constantly letting me down, “I’ll be home in 20 minutes” Here I am waiting, 6 hours later. “Yeah babe, I’m taking you out tonight” Woops, that doesn’t happen. He hasn’t taken me out in over a month-he says we shouldn’t waste the money b.c we’re moving soon; but when he does out with his friends he can spend over $ 100 in one night and not even stress it!!! He even has this one friend that calls him CONSTANTLY to drink UGH!Im in NY any advise?
Please keep in mind that I do not want to leave him. I love him and I do want to stick by him and help. I just want some help and advise from people in similar situations. We’ve had a wonderful relationship up until the last few months.

Until he is ready to admit that he is an alcoholic and needs help there is nothing you can do. The first thing you do need to let him know though is that you will NOT let him drive the car anymore on nights when he is going out drinking. If he kills or seriously injures someone with your name on the insurance you might get yourself in trouble. Tell him it’s either you or the alcohol and then get out until he is ready to admit that he has a problem.
