Those of Us Who Truly Have Dysfunctional Parents, How Do You Explain That to People?

Question by Natural Mom: Those of us who truly have dysfunctional parents, how do you explain that to people?
My parents are horribly dysfunctional – ones a drug addict and the other is going that way sometimes, and enabling other times. It is so difficult when the subject of parents comes up with friends. My parents are truly sick in the head, and spent most of my life manipulating me and using me for their own needs. I refuse to let them be in my life again, and will never regret that decision (if you knew them, you’d know why) – but how do I help others understand that – especially those who had a great childhood and have great parents?

You don’t have to explain anything to anyone if you don’t want to. It’s not other people’s business. If you must say something, just say, “I grew up in a very bad living situation,” and leave it at that.
