alcoholics are always considered to have a disease, but smokers, for example, are just addicted. why the double standard?

It’s not a “disease”, it’s a “disorder”… An individual finding every excuse in the book to enable overconsumption of alcohol, is nothing related to an infection..
Your brain cells are being destroyed, yes; but that is the alcohol itself doing that when intoxicated, not the brain cells doing it alone.
Smoking kills brain cells as well, so if alcoholism is considered a “disease”, nicotine addiction should be too… Simple as that.
