Ginger: Welcome to US Tzu Chi 360. I’m Ginger Chang. Our feature today focuses on a less publicized national health issue: America’s broken dental care system. According to CBS News, a shocking 100 million Americans forgo dental insurance because it is too expensive. Putting off dental treatment not only leads to health problems and unemployment, but it can result in death too. To address the obscure health crisis, Tzu Chi’s Medical Foundation have been serving the nation’s vulnerable and underserved population since 1993. The CEO of Tzu Chi’s Medical Foundation, Debra Boudreaux is here today to tell us more about the Foundation’s great work. Welcome Mrs. Boudreaux! So before we begin, you use to be a journalist then why did you get yourself involved in Tzu Chi’s Medical Foundation? Debra Boudreaux: I believe back to 20 (some) years ago, I had spent time at a Methodist Hospital emergency room. So I started to do the volunteer work and my mom kept telling me why do you have to do that kind of work in a some kind of different faith-based hospital? There’s a Buddhist organization that also needs some help. So that time Brother Steven Huang and Dr. Chin-Lon Lin, they indicated that they were going to have a clinic set up. So they asked if I could help. I said okay, why not. So I just started to reach out to Tzu Chi Organization.
