I assume it means to diminish any negative family influences and/or behavioral patterns that hinder individual development. In other words, one must not allow onself to be burdened by overwhelming family expectations for measuring self-worth OR not allow onself to succumb to familial predispositions, such as drug & alcohol abuse, domestic violence, depression, etc.
