How to Write an Intervention Letter for Alcohol or Drug Abuse
1st Part (paragraph) The first paragraph will have good, happy and positive examples that you remember about your loved one. You will be writing specific examples, situations or events that you remember when she was healthy, happy and positive in nature.
2nd Part (paragraph) The second paragraph will be at least two, up to three, detailed examples of your loved one’s erratic and bizarre behavior (w/ or w/o consequences) and how the behavior is affecting you emotionally, spiritually, financially, physically, mentally or socially in your life.
3rd Part (paragraph) The third paragraph will be begin with writing two or three self-pledges (how you will stop enabling) and ways to protect yourself from the guilt if something tragic happens to you loved one. You will also strategically place in the letter why you are going to do “this” so it does not come across as an ultimatum. Then you will transition into what you want back, what you want to see for him or what you will do for him if he seeks help. You will then ask him to go to treatment today as your very last sentence in the form of a question.
*The letter will not exceed ¾ of one page with no more than 3 paragraphs.
Each person will read and write their own intervention letter that will be read to the addicted individual. If the person interrupts a family while they are reading their letter, the family member will calmly express to the addict that they said they would listen to the letter.
