Do I Have to Be an “alcoholic” for My Whole Life Even if I Don’t Drink?
Question by Leah K: Do I have to be an “alcoholic” for my whole life even if I don’t drink?
Two years ago I received an MIP. As a result, I had to attend AA meetings and do an alcohol education program. At AA, they told me I had the disease of alcoholism. They said that I will never not be addicted to alcohol and could only be “in recovery”–I would never be cured. They also said I needed to go to AA for life. Even if I didn’t drink alcohol, without meetings, I would only be a “dry drunk.” They said I would pass the gene onto my children.
So I decided to NOT DRINK ANYMORE. Since my MIP, I have not had a drink. I have no desire to drink. I drank during my first semester at college because I thought drinking was cool. Now, I don’t allow people to pressure me into drinking. AAers keep calling me and asking me what my “triggers” are and how I am handling my “cravings.” I don’t have cravings! I am not an alcoholic! I don’t have a disease! My friend has a disease–She has breast cancer.
Why can’t I go on with my life and not be called an “alcoholic.”? I don’t drink! I don’t want to go to AA. I would rather focus on school work and do fun hobbies like playing tennis.

Tell them to f*ck off. The AA is a religious organisation that is full of sh*t and lies about alcoholism being a ‘disease’. It’s NOT a disease. If you aren’t drinking then move on.
