Alcohol Symptoms: Want to Know More About Learning/intellectual Disabilities?

Question by captainvanadium: Want to know more about learning/intellectual disabilities?
I have been working with students with learning disabilities for about a year. Most of the students have fetal alcohol syndrome. I have just discovered that one of the students has actually never been medically diagnosed as having FAS.

This is a confusing situation because this student has a real confusing “mishmash” of “symptoms.” S/he dropped out of school so how much of the inability to work with numbers is related to gaps in his knowledge & how much is a real disability?

When s/he is “underpressure”, they simply run. Often this student are out living on the streets but will claim “I was working on myself.” S/he has picked up all the new age terms/lingo from countless workshops (most of which never get finished) to justify what s/he is doing.

I think this escape-oriented wanderlust is either a learned behavior or a true compulsion. I am not convinced that the student actually has FAS. Are there any intellectual disabilities where “running away” is a key feature?
I am a teacher and have had a lot of teaching experience in regular academics. This is a new field for me and its been a learning experience.

To the best of my knowledge this student has never been professionally diagnosed.Thank you for your help.
I am not playing doctor. I am asking someone who is a medical professional to make a diagnosis.

I have never come across any conditions that “running away” is a key feature of the disability – not in the way you describe.

I can only speak from my own experience -as I am not a clinical expert. But it sounds like your suspicion is correct – this child might not necessarily have FAS (s/he MIGHT but unless definitely diagnosed – so won’t know) But it sounds like she definitely has some learning deficits as well as, possibly, some mental health issues.

This type of behaviour sounds like it is learnt. She did it in the past and it worked and that reinforced her. She sounds like she is intelligent enough to “work the system” as you described – “Often this student are out living on the streets but will claim “I was working on myself.” S/he has picked up all the new age terms/lingo from countless workshops (most of which never get finished) to justify what s/he is doing” This means she is aware of of what she is learning and using it to her advantage.

However – whether you want to take your suspicion about her NOT having FAS to the higher authority is something you have to consider yourself whether it is worth the consequences.

Hope this helps
