The Deleterious Effects of Alcohol

Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant with a wide range of effects. The amount consumed has a direct effect on the extent you become intoxicated.

Intoxication levels increase over the amount of time spent drinking. When you have your first drink, you may feel relaxed and in control. However, the more you drink, the more side effects you begin to feel such as blurred vision and slurred speech. These effects however are more noticeable to the people around you than yourself.

Many people who drink do so as it gives them a feeling of euphoria. This feeling tends to leave one with an overall improved mood and social confidence. Additionally and unfortunately, your attention span shortens and you may feel more flushed whilst you drink. Your judgment also becomes worse (however you think it is becoming better) and many people say the first thing that comes to mind or do things that they would not normally do. Motor coordination or fine muscle movements such as putting a house key in a door lock also become much harder with the more that one drinks. Although people feel initially upbeat and happy, alcohol is a depressant and thus feelings of lethargy begin to take over. As a result many, drunk people fall asleep in all types of places, on buses, on trains and even at the bar. Many people have trouble remembering things that happened especially very recent events. Body movements are uncoordinated and you may react to situations more slowly. Vision becomes blurry and drunken people have trouble seeing.

Confusion is also caused by drinking. You may get confused and very emotional and less likely to respond to pain. If you get in a fight while you are drunk, you will not feel the pain until the alcohol wears off. Additionally, you will not be able to fight in a coordinated manner and this causes more injuries to all members involved.

Stupor can be defined as a state of reduced sensibility or mental numbness. This is another short term effect of alcohol. In this condition, movement is seriously impaired and you may lapse in and out of consciousness. You can slip into a coma and become completely unaware of your surroundings. At this point, the risk alcohol poisoning is vastly increased. The loss of body functions can begin like losing control of the bladder, breathing and heart rate.

Binge drinking can potentially lead to coma and possibly end your life. The best way to avoid these risks is to cease drinking alcohol altogether. Many people especially if they do not drink alcohol often can feel the alcohol affecting them from the very first sip, such is the strength that alcohol has.

Long term alcoholism can cause a number of serious health risks including cirrhosis of the liver, heart pump weakening called alcoholic cardiomyopathy, brain damage as well as a number of other serious medical conditions. Some of these include, blurred vision, vertigo, amnesia, ataxia, and peripheral vascular disease.

The liver is the organ in the body which filters toxins and other substances in the blood out od the body. As a result, when it becomes cirrhotic and non-functioning, certain toxins build up leading to symptoms of Jaundice. This is what you are seeing when a person’s skin begins to turn yellow.

In today’s society, many people don’t think of alcohol as a drug but it is in fact the most catastrophic drug in the world in terms of negative effects to the population It is just as lethal as any other drug can be and even more-so due to it’s addictive nature. When you overuse any type of drug you can expect consequences and the fact the alcohol is so readily available and accepted by the global culture, these effects are greater. Many people think that it is okay to drink alcohol once in a while however the safest level of drinking is none at all.

The next time you feel like a drink, stop and think. Are you hurting yourself and others around you with your drinking? It doesn’t matter if you drink casually, at home, rarely or only at social functions, every drop will hurt you.
