Diagnose Disease Symptoms: Need Advise in Helping an Child With Autism Make a Major Decision!!!?

Question by Heather C: Need advise in helping an child with autism make a major decision!!!?
My son is 13 years old. He was diagnosed with autism at 4 years old. However, at 2-1/2 years old, he was diagnosed with a genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis. This disorder causes tumors to form in any part of the body at any time. However, a common “symptom” of this disorder, which is usually the diagnostic feature of this disorder, is brain tumors. My son currently has a large one in his occipital lobe and will be undergoing surgery soon to have it removed. Today, I found out that he has been approved to be granted a “wish” from the “A Wish Come True” Foundation. This agency grants wishes to children with potentially life-threatening disease such as going to Disney World, meeting favorite sports teams, music groups or movie stars, etc. However, my son’s realm of thinking in this world is no farther than going bowling or the arcade. How do I help him make such a huge decision? He is very suggestive and if I started giving him examples of what he might like, he would just pick the first thing I say. Any advice? Serious inquires only!!!

Wow! This certainly sounds like quite a decision, and an amazing opportunity!

I wouldn’t go just for whatever sounds “big” like Disney or meeting Justin Bieber, although that would be my wish. I would try to do what is best for your son.:)

I would try to seek out what you think his potential interests are. Although he might not be old enough to know himself, there are always little signs of what it could be at young ages. Perhaps if he enjoys the arcade maybe he would like to be a video game designer or something of that sort? Maybe he has a favorite cartoon or show that he would love to do something with, like meeting the voices or something. Maybe Spiderman is really cool to him, so see if he could meet “spiderman!”:)

I’m sorry, I really don’t know enough about him to give you a specific answer, but I feel like if you used this form of thinking, because you actually do know him, you will come up with something fantastic.

I wish you the best of luck, to your son as well!
