HELP!! I Want to Give Up TV and Computer (Or at Least the Majority of It)?
Question by maddywoo13: HELP!! I want to give up TV and computer (Or at least the majority of it)?
Hello! I’m 17, frankly, I am very sad by how much time I have invested over the past 6-8 years watching TV and playing the computer (I know, the irony). I grew up pretty sheltered and I didn’t have many childhood friends and I am shy. Each day after school I would get on the computer with the TV playing right next to me until it was time to go to bed (from 3:30pm til 10pm). Now on weekends (I wake up early), it is from 6 or 7am til 10pm again. Just today, I realize I have a big problem. I’m a big procrastinator, I have no self discipline and I believe is because I of this habit I formed.
I have have have to nip this in the bud. I did pretty lame on the SATs (Not like in the 100’s, just not high enough to go where I wanna go), I’m graduating in 2 months but not with great grades because of the time I could have taken to study and work on skills I need, I got on the computer and watched old reruns of Sex and the City and surfed the web. If I do get into college, I know this kind of crap will not be acceptable. I know have potential, it;s just igniting it is the problem.
My goal is to go without TV and computer for so long that when I do watch it, I won’t easily slip back into this “addiction”.
So my question is, what are some approaches to take to ease my way out of this? I would still watch tv for the exception of the news but everything else must go. In between the reality shows, cheesy tv shows, etc. it’s started to get utterly ridiculous. I already have some hobbies in mind, like I want to start studying more (of course), reading books, learning Spanish, knitting, getting more, etc, But even when i do try to take approach to those things, I start going through withdrawal like symptoms like if its right in front of me (There is a TV in every room in the house) I start to look at it a lot, and wonder about what’s on and things I should do on the computer, and then I decide to take a break and that’s it.
I know this was kind of long but I do appreciate all answers. Please do not judge me on this, I know it’s pathetic but what matters is that I want to change, right? Most people don’t.
